Instrument.Play.Graphics - Modular Graphic Synthesizer -

1
Layer 1
Practical, Aesthetic, and Material

It is a tactile graphic interface integrating sight, sound, and touch, inviting audiences to generate visuals through play.

2
Layer 2
Structural, Social, and Cultural

The work rediscovers purposeless creativity, challenges productivity-driven design culture while acknowledging commercial design’s necessity.

3
Layer 3
Emotional, Existential, and Aspirational

The work advocates play as the origin of creation — process over result — where design becomes an act of joy and exploration.

“Instrument.Play.Graphics - Modular Graphic Synthesizer -” may be understood as an inquiry into how the graphic—once confined solely to the realm of vision—can be transformed into something tactile.

As the continuation of the 2024 work “Instrument.play.graphics”, this iteration introduces a system of physical patching through wires, weaving corporeal gesture into the visual field, seeking a convergence of body and image.

Shunta Sakamoto (b. 1993, Osaka) is a Tokyo-based creative director and art director whose practice spans graphic design, interactivity, and installation. He views creativity not simply as a commercial skill, but as one of humanity’s most primal acts: play. Through his independent project “Play.Graphics”, under the concept “Graphics as Playthings”, he explores how visual expression can return to play as lived experience—treating paper, screen, stage, and installation as elements “composited into a single visual within the medium of vision.”

A graduate of Musashino Art University’s Department of Science of Design, Sakamoto began his career at Hakuhodo before co-founding NEW Creators Club in 2021, where he continues to serve as co-representative. His honours include the JAGDA New Designer Award (2024) and JAGDA Awards in Digital Media (2023, 2024)—among the most prestigious accolades in Japanese graphic design.
