The Playful Frontier: Where Graphics and Interaction Collide

Join visionary graphic designers Sakamoto Shuta and Jonathan Mak, in conversation with professor Isaac Leung, for an exploration of experiential graphic design. Discover how the field is transforming, evolving beyond a purely visual medium into a realm of tactile, participatory encounters.

Through case studies and insights, the speakers will demonstrate how physical interaction, sound, and an element of “play” can forge powerful, multi-sensory communication. This dialogue will reveal how design can reconnect us with the pure joy of creation, reminding us of our shared humanity through the very act of engaging with our surroundings.

Shunta Sakamoto
Co-creator of “Instrument.Play.Graphics - Modular Graphic Synthesizer -”

Shunta Sakamoto (b. 1993, Osaka) is a Tokyo-based creative director and art director whose practice spans graphic design, interactivity, and installation. He views creativity not simply as a commercial skill, but as one of humanity’s most primal acts: play. Through his independent project “Play.Graphics”, under the concept “Graphics as Playthings”, he explores how visual expression can return to play as lived experience—treating paper, screen, stage, and installation as elements “composited into a single visual within the medium of vision.”

A graduate of Musashino Art University’s Department of Science of Design, Sakamoto began his career at Hakuhodo before co-founding NEW Creators Club in 2021, where he continues to serve as co-representative. His honours include the JAGDA New Designer Award (2024) and JAGDA Awards in Digital Media (2023, 2024)—among the most prestigious accolades in Japanese graphic design.
