The Mixer

1
Layer 1
Practical, Aesthetic, and Material

The work transforms a utilitarian sound mixer into an interactive cylindrical instrument.

2
Layer 2
Structural, Social, and Cultural

The unpredictability of DIY electronics is embraced. Sound becomes organic and ever-changing, posing questions to conventional musical forms.

3
Layer 3
Emotional, Existential, and Aspirational

The work proposes inclusivity in music, where there’s no right or wrong. Every sound and perspective can coexist harmoniously and be heard.

The authors’ signature work, “The Mixer”, is an interactive installation centred around a towering, custom-built mixer that links three independent light-reactive sound devices into a dynamic network. This evolving network responds to both environmental changes—such as shifts in brightness, colour, and rhythm—and to the gestures of participants. Light-sensitive components allow these inputs to directly shape the sound, with each device generating its own unique response. As the lights shift and the audience engages, space, time, and sound merge into a vibrant and evanescent environment.

Unlike traditional mixers, “The Mixer” has no fixed rules. It serves as an open platform where anyone can connect instruments, experiment freely, and collaborate to co-create unrepeatable soundscapes. Through this shared exploration, spectators become active makers, celebrating unpredictability and collective creation.

Mui, Kin

The design team of this work is composed of Mui and Kin; two electronic music enthusiasts from diverse backgrounds. The collective shares a deep fascination with the raw, unpredictable qualities of analogue electronics. By designing and building their own experimental devices, they create installations and performances where imperfection and chance are not flaws to be corrected, but essential aspects of artistic expression.
