DIY Light-Sound Instrument Workshop

In the “DIY Light-Sound Instrument Workshop”, participants will learn to build a light synthesiser from scratch using a breadboard (a solderless universal circuit board). By assembling circuits and understanding the placement and connections of each component, participants will explore how light-sensitive elements interact with electronic parts, transforming light and shadow into sound. At the end of the workshop, participants will not only take home their own crafted light synthesiser but will also gain the knowledge to expand and modify their designs, laying the foundation for creating personalised instruments in the future. This is a great opportunity to spark creativity and explore the synthesis of light and shadow.

The workshop is open to individuals without an electronics background who are interested in the interaction of light and sound.

Amy Chan & Natalie Cheung

Light artist Amy Chan and dramaturg Natalie Cheung collaborated on multiple cross-media projects including "Things That Talk," "Inter-Face," "Sound Forms: Re-turn," and "Sound Astronauts," exploring the dynamic relationship between light and sound. Their works feature DIY circuit installations, interactive sensor devices, and more. They lead workshops on light and circuitry in various communities, as well as in primary and secondary schools. Their research is prominently featured in international journals and conferences such as Critical Stages, Performance Studies International (Hamburg, London), and the Prague Quadrennial.
