Department of Everyday Problems / Unnecessary Inventions

Matty Benedetto, the creator of “Unnecessary Inventions”, has built a global following by inventing playful, unexpected solutions to problems nobody actually has. His practice begins with a simple question: What if we took everyday frustrations less seriously and responded with imagination instead?

At deTour 2026, Matty presents “Department of Everyday Problems”—an interactive installation that transforms a familiar retail environment into a space of discovery. Visitors are invited to leave their worries at the counter or review a selected invention. Part retail nostalgia, part participatory interaction, the experience reframes problem-solving as a precious journey—where the solution may be unnecessary, but the act of imagining it might bring its own surprises.

Blending humour, design, and storytelling, Matty’s work reminds us that not every problem requires a perfect answer. Sometimes, the best response is to reimagine the problem itself. “Department of Everyday Problems” invites visitors to view their everyday concerns through a lighter lens—leaving with a smile, if not a solution.
