“Beyond the Circle” investigates whether a rotational process can create forms that resist rotational symmetry. Traditional woodturning has long been defined by the relationship between rotation and perfect circular forms. Rather than accepting this convention as inevitable, the project explores how offset turning, irregular timber, live-edge blanks and sequential cutting strategies can expand the formal language of the lathe.
Developed through years of experimentation, the project presents woodturning as an evolving design practice rather than a fixed craft tradition. Prototypes, failed experiments, tooling studies and finished objects are exhibited together, allowing visitors to follow the iterative process behind each decision. Rather than concealing mistakes, every trial becomes evidence of refinement.
The project proposes a new vocabulary for woodturning—one that embraces asymmetry, material behaviour and controlled irregularity while remaining faithful to the logic of rotation. It demonstrates that innovation within craft is achieved not by replacing tradition, but by continuously questioning and expanding its boundaries through making.
