Bamboo Crafting Lampshade Workshop

A lampshade is an object that both holds and molds light, and the dynamic interplay of positive and negative space can easily transform the ambiance of a home. In this workshop, participants will learn traditional bamboo craft techniques such as carving, weaving, and paper application. Using bamboo splints as the starting material, they will create a personalised lampshade that showcases their unique style.

By skillfully shaping bamboo splints, arranging washi paper, and selecting suitable materials, participants will be able to manage how light and shadow interact within their spaces, creating both functional and visually appealing lighting effects. Additionally, they will have the opportunity to design a variety of lamp styles, including pendant and table lamps.

Notes to Participants
Participants should note that knives will be provided and can be used at their discretion. Since bamboo fragments will be generated, wearing easy-to-clean clothes is recommended. They should measure their preferred lampshade size in advance, as size and style restrictions will be given. The workshop does not include the light fixture, but bringing their own is suggested if size allows.

Zaat Hap Laa

“Zaat Hap Laa” was founded by four bamboo crafting creators: Emily, Oscar, Jeffrey, and Mimmy. Each member brings a unique background—ranging from urban research to social design, communication design, and contemporary art. With a shared passion for humanity, innovation, and aesthetics, they delve into bamboo crafting, seeking to uncover modern significance in this traditional art form through their distinct perspectives. In recent years, their projects include “The Harvest Moon”, an installation created for the Project Plum Grove, and "Roaming Kwun Lung," produced for the JART to Heart Post-Event Showcase.

Paper crafting is a medium rich in texture and meaning, fulfilling our pursuit of beauty, curiosity about cultural heritage, and dreams of creative expression. It has united these four young artists from different disciplines, all sharing the same goal: to preserve and pass on this craft.
